Scala
Multi-functional education Space in Tibet
Architectural Competition (1st Prize)

Baiyun County, Tibet, China
May, 2022

Amidst the societal transformations driven by educational inequity and the COVID-19 pandemic in Tibet in 2022, our team proposes a prototype for an alternative educational model. Informed by prior research into documentaries on education in the Sichuan-Tibet region, we found that preserving traditional cultural practices and agricultural knowledge holds deeper significance for these communities than standardized basic education.

The site located in Baiyu, a small county in the Sichuan-Tibet region. The SCALA school system employs a trapezoidal layout which divides itself into three groups. The nylon of Tibetan Buddhism is used as more guides and lenses to gatherthe aura and make the building truly landing.

Structurally, the school employs a traditional column-grid construction. The column network construction method prepares for infinite extension possibilities for the future which implies education in rural areas hasits own possibilities.

Architecturally, the project retains terraced forms and local materials, the structure blends seamlessly into clusters of Sichuan-Tibetan residents, fostering cultural preservation and communal acceptance. The open-plan framework further ensures flexibility, accommodating multifunctional uses while prioritizing natural ventilation—a critical response to post-pandemic design imperatives.
